Metal enhancement processes Flashcards

1
Q

What is work hardening

A

Cold worked by bending, rolling or hammering the crystals within the metal distorting them increasing the tensile strength of the metal.

Q

What is annealing

A

Use to make the work hardening metal easier to work with by making it less brittle and more ductile. The metal is heated allowing the crystals to more in a formation.

Case hardening

A

Used for hardening the surface of steels with less than 0.4% carbon content, creating an outer case with grater hardness and resistance to surface indentation.

Q

Hardening and tempering

A

Hardening is the process of heating medium and high carbon steels to alter the exterior crystalline structure. The hardening increases the hardness and increases the brittleness.
After being hardened they then need to be tempered to reduce excess hardness and increase the toughness. To temper metal the metal needs to be heated below the critical point.
