sc7 Flashcards
1
Q
what is the form of graphite and diamonds?
A
giant covalent substances
2
Q
what is the structure of diamond?
A
- each carbon joined to 4 other carbons —> no delocalised electrons so doesn’t conduct electricity
- has a high melting point due to a lot of covalent bonds
- hard
3
Q
what is the structure of graphite?
A
- each carbon is covalently bonded to 3 other carbons —> has delocalised electrons so can conduct electricity
- layers of hexagonal rings —> layers are bonded with weak intermolecular forces so can slide over each other, making it soft
4
Q
what are some uses of graphite and diamonds?
A
graphite :
- electrodes -> can conduct electricity
- lubricant -> soft and slippery
diamond :
- cutting tools -> hard and rigid
- jewellery -> high melting point
5
Q
what is the structure of graphene?
A
- single layer of graphite
- can conduct electricity
—> useful in electronics
