sc23 Flashcards
1
Q
what is the general formula for alcohols?
A
- OH functional group
2
Q
what is the general formula for alcohols?
A
Cn,H2n+1,OH
3
Q
what can be done to alcohols to make it an alkene?
A
dehydrate it
4
Q
what is the general formula for carboxylic acids?
A
Cn-1, H2n-1, COOH
5
Q
what do you do to an alcohol to make it a carboxylic acid?
A
oxidise it
e.g propanol + oxygen —> propanoic acid
6
Q
why do members of a given homologous series have similar reactions?
A
- molecules contain same functional group
- same products of other members cus of same functional group
7
Q
how is ethanol produced?
A
- by fermentation of yeast.
- produced from carbohydrates (sugars)
- mixture must be kept warm and under anaerobic conditions
warm —> reaction is fast but yeast doesn’t denature
8
Q
how do you obtain ethanol by fractional distillation of the fermentation mixture?
A
- water and ethanol solution are heated
- ethanol will evaporate first , cools and condenses
- water left will evaporate, cool and condenses
