sc10 Flashcards
What are electrolytes?
ionic compounds in a molten state or dissolved in water
What is electrolysis?
A process in which electrical energy from a direct current supply decomposes electrolytes
Where do cations go to in electrolysis?
The NEGATIVELY charged cathode
Where do anions go in electrolysis?
To the POSITIVELY charged anode
What is oxidation (in terms of electrons)?
the LOSS of electrons
What is reduction (in terms of electrons)?
The GAIN of electrons
Does oxidation or reduction happen at the anode?
Oxidation
Does oxidation or reaction happen at the cathode?
Reduction
In the core practical of electrolysis, what happens to the mass of the anode and why?
It decreases because at the anode, copper gets oxidised
What happens to the mass of the cathode in the core practical of electrolysis and why?
It increases because positive copper ions are attracted to it
