SBM: Pharmacology & therapeutics - Coagulation Flashcards
What are the 3 causes of bleeding?
Vascular disorders, platelet disorders, and defective coagulation
What does thrombocytopenia mean?
Low platelets <150
when can symptoms for thrombocytopenia arise?
Under 10
What does ITP stand for?
Immune Thrombocytopena
How do you treat ITP?
steroids/IV immunoglobulins/ Splenectomy
Name a coagulation disorder
Haemophilia
Describe the coagulation cascade
> 100
What is the difference between haemophilia A and B?
A = deficiency of Factor VIII (8) B = deficiency of factor IX (9)
What is Christmas Disease
Haemophilia B
Does haemophilia affect males or females? And WHy?
Males
Because they are X Linked conditions
What are the features of haemophilia
Spontaneous bleeding into joints and muscle. Post Op bleeding.
How can you test coagulation?
APTT = Activated Partial thromboplastin time. PT = Prothrombin Time. TT= thrombin time.
FIBRINOGEN level.
What does APTT test?
Intrinisic pathway
What does PT test?
Extrinsic Pathway
Desrcribe the findings with someone with a diagnosis of haemophilia.
Prolonged APTT, Normal PT, Low Factor 8/9
