SB7 animal coordination/ hormones Flashcards
what is homeostasis
maintaining a constant internal environment
what is a hormone
a chemical messenger that travels in the blood to target organs and cells
what does ADH stand for
anti durietic hormone
what does FSH stand for and where is it released from
follicle stimulating hormone, from the pituitary gland
what does LH stand for and where is it released from
luitenising hormone, from the pituitary gland
where are the osmoreceptors
in the hypothalamus, brain
what do osmoreceptors do
detect a rise/fall in water content in the blood and tell the pituitary gland to release more or less ADH
more ADH causes…..
collecting duct membranes to become more permeable, more water reabsorbed into the blood stream
less ADH released causes…
collecting ducts to become less permeable so less water reabsorbed ,
insulin causes
glucose to glycogen in the liver to reduce blood sugar concentration
insulin is produced and releassed from
the pancreas
what is type 1 diabetes and how is it caused
when the pancreas doesnt produce enough or any insulin, caused by genetics (most commonly?) and is most likely in children
how can type 1 diabetes be treated
insulin injections taken before or around mealtime, insulin pump or monitor under the skin to measure levels
what is type 2 diabetes and how can it be treated
when the body becomes insulin resistant
what is the role of the nephron
to filter the blood to make urine
