SB3 Flashcards
Variation
Offspring will be better suited to new conditions so will be more likely to survive and reproduce
Asexual reproduction
Reproduce without fertilization. This procures clones. It is faster than sexual reproduction because there is no need to find a mate. No variation
Zygote
A fertilized egg cell formed when two gametes fuse
DNA
where you find the instructions for an organism
Four bases of DNA
Adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine
How do the bases of DNA pair
A & T
C & G
Mutation
A change in the bases of a gene creates a genetic variant.
Alleles
Mutations in genes. One gene can have many alleles. (e.g brown, blue)
Phenotype
Observable characteristics
Homozygous
If both alleles for one gene are the same, and organism is homozygoyous
Heterozygous
If the alleles are different, and organism is heterozygous
Dominant
An allele that will be displayed in a heterozygous organism
Recessive
An allele that will not be displayed in a heterozygous organism
Genetic diagram
A dominant allele is shown by a capital letter. The recessive allele has the lower case version of the same letter.
Genotype
The alleles in an organism
