SB2f Brain and spinal cord problems Flashcards

1
Q

Describe CT

A

A CT scan shows structure in brain. Exray beam move in circle around head, detectors measure absorption fo X-rays. Computer build view of inside of body as serie of slices.

Q

Explain how brain function is studied using scanning, and the advantages of this

A

It provides an image of brain activity. Advantages are it is safe, painless and no special preparation is required.

Q

Explain the effects of spinal cord damage.

A

can seriously affect the body’s ability to coordinate signals in response to stimuli.
signals may no longer be sent along motor neurone effectively.

Q

Describe PET scanning

A

Shows brain activity. Patient injected with radioactive glucose, more active cell take more glucose then less active, cause gamma rays, which scanner detects. more come from parts contains more active.

Q

Explain the limitations of brain surgery.

A

These surgeries carry an extremely high level of risk due to the complexity of the brain. If any damage is done to the nerve cells, the conditions that follow are permanent as those cells simply cannot regrow.

Q

Explain why some types of spinal cord

damage cannot be fully r

A

As it is hard to create neurones and It is difficult to find suitable stem cell donors.
