S.B film techniques - power Flashcards
NORMA’S POWER OVER JOE:
Mannerisms:
How Norma Grabs onto Joes hair,
Joe is always looking away from Norma, but Norma tries to bring his gaze to her always;
touching his face and pulling it to her.
Norma needs his gaze
NORMA’S POWER OVER JOE:
Monkey Symbol:
Represents Joe himself and his lack of power
Could demonstrate Norma’s desire for a “pet” or a play
thing to entertain her for a while
The monkey’s death suggests how people/things are
disposable to her - Joe
replaces the monkey
Foreshadows Joe’s own death
NORMA’S POWER OVER JOE:
camera shots
High shots/low shots:
When Joe is ‘trapped’ in the house there are high shots,
Whereas
at Artie’s party everyone is shot at the waist to show equality.
Prison Bar low angle shot:
After Joe leads Betty out of Norma’s house we see Norma overlooking Joes return with the framing of the scene for the bars to look like prison bar
