What is sawm
The fourth pillar of faith, fasting during the month of Ramadan; a time dedicated to self-discipline and spiritual reflection; it is refraining from eating, drinking (including water), smoking and sexual activity from dawn to dusk for one month; it is also abstaining from evil thoughts, harmful actions and unkind speech a special meal (suhar) is eaten before dawn, and at dusk the fast is broken by the lftar meal (often includes dates and water) before a bigger shared meal; Muslim gather at a mosque for extra night prayers (which include readings from section of the quran, so that the whole quran is read during the month); all Muslims should attend the 27th day of Ramadan- Laylat ul Qadr (night of power)
When is Sawm performed
By all Muslims during the month of Ramadan between sunrise and sunset each day; Ramadan comes with the new moon; those who are ill or travelling are exempt (Quran 2:184), though they are expected to make it up later.
Why is Sawm important
It is commanded by God in the Quran; it follows the example of Muhammad; it celebrates God’s giving the Quran to humans; it brings people closer to God; it is a reminder of God’s mercy and blessings; it helps Muslims identify with the poor; it promotes self-discipline; it helps to inspire and refresh personal faith; it unites Muslim communities.
