The condition is seen in degenerative and other joint diseases that produce increased amounts of synovial fluid. In adults, popliteal cysts can be large, extending as far as midcalf, and it may interfere with knee movements.

Often, no treatment is required, and the cyst may disappear on its own. If a cyst is large and causes significant pain, needle aspiration of the fluid can be performed under ultrasonic guidance
