to investigate the relative suicide rates and self inflicted deaths of prisoners, community offenders and the general population.

procedure
A
Data collected on two sample groups and compared to general population:
- offenders serving community sentences
- offenders in england and wales
data collected from 1996 and 1997 death records.

Results
A
- community offenders mortality rate double prisoners and 4 x the male population.
- similar death rate for suicide
- accidental death rate was higher for community offenders

conclusions
A
Violent death was a bigger issue in community offenders than prisoners
both groups were similarly vulnerable to suicide, however the risk of accidental death and homicide were higher for community offenders
drugs and alcohol played a large part in the deaths of community offenders
prisons reduce self inflicted deaths
