Aim
To investigate the experiences of offenders on probation orders in a cross section of probation offices in England and Wales.
Sample
3299 offenders selected randomly from 22 probation offices covering all ages and crimes. 40% failed to take part.
Procedure
Data collected face to face in a structured interview asked about life and likelihood of reoffending. quantitative data.
results
88% felt probation was useful
60% felt that their probation officer would help them sort out problems but only 37% felt this would stop reoffending.
Conclusions
probation is seen in a positive light by offenders however offenders don’t think that probation is intended to stop reoffending, 1/3 went on to reoffend (less than prison rate)
