what is Satire?
The use of humor to attack or ridicule something that is considered to be foolish, flawed, or wrong.
Irony
The actual intent is expressed in words or situations which carry the opposite meaning,
Verbal Irony
When someone says one thing but means another. Most sarcastic comments are ironic.
Situational Irony
Describes an event that not just surprising but actually contrary to what we expected
Dramatic Irony
When we know what is in store for a character, but the character does not know
Travesty
Presents a serious (often religious) subject frivolously, reducing everything to its lowest levels
Burlesque
Ridiculous exaggeration achieved through a variety of ways
Parody
Definitions to imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place, or thing in order to ridicule (or make fun) of the original
Farce
Exciting laughter through exaggerated improbable situations
Invective
Harsh, abusive language directed against a person or cause
Sarcasm
A sharply mocking or contemptuous remark. The term came from the Greek word “sarkazein” which means “to tear flesh”
Knaves and Fools
In comedy there are no villains and no innocent victims. Instead there are rogues (knaves) and suckers (fools) The knave exploits someone “asking for it”
malapropism
A deliberate mispronunciation of a name or term with the intent of pocking
