Sarcoidosis Flashcards
What is sarcoidosis
o Autoimmune inflammatory disease that causes pathologic graulomas to form in two or more organs.
o Other granuloma causes must be ruled out including; fungal infections, malignancy, and environmental exposures to beryllium
o Most common organ affected is the lungs
o Typically young adult to adult females
What are s/s of sarcoidosis
o Can be asymptomatic
o Fever, malaise, dyspnea, pain, cough
What are diagnostics of sarcoidosis
o CXR
o Bronchial lavage/biopsy is needed to make diagnosis
o Additional Tests
6-12 month PFTs and CXRs
EKGS annually
Annual eye exam
Stress test to determine risk for sudden cardiac death
Sarcoidosis treatment
o NSAIDS
o Steroids
o Methyltrexate
o Hydrochloriquine
o Infliximab or thalidone can be used if refractory
o Cyclosporine if other treatments fail
Sarcoidosis staging
o I: bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy
o II: Bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy and infiltrates
o III: Bilateral Infiltrates
o IV : fibrosis
