Sarcoidosis is a chronic granulomatous disorder of unknown aetiology, commonly affecting the lungs, skin, and eyes

What is the characteristic feature of sarcoidosis?
Accumulation of lymphocytes and macrophages
Non-caseating granulomas in lungs etc.
What are key presenting features of sarcoidosis?
Cough Dyspnoea Chronic fatigue Arthralgia Wheeze Lymphadenopathy Photophobia Red painful eye Blurred vision
How is sarcoidosis diagnosed?
Clinically Bloods - hypercalcaemia, raised ESR CXR Spirometry - restrictive disease Tissue biopsy
What might be seen on CXR in sarcoidosis?
stage 0 = normal
stage 1 = bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy (BHL)
stage 2 = BHL + interstitial infiltrates
stage 3 = diffuse interstitial infiltrates only
stage 4 = diffuse fibrosis
What is the management for acute resp failure sarcoidosis?
IV/Oral corticosteroid
Ventilatory support and O2
