Sanctity of Life Flashcards
what religion would you use
christianity
if it says ‘explain what is meant by sanctity of life’ what would you talk about
Bible stuff and religious ethics (CHRISTIANITY)-it only really applies to nat law and religious ethics/situation ethics (Joseph Fletcher- 4 working principles, Mrs Bergmeier, etc)
genesis 1 states:
‘so god created humankind in his image’
how does the bible show god identifies with humans
parable of sheep and goats: Jesus: ‘whatever you do for the least of my brothers you are doing for me’ -identifies with even the lowliest of human life
what is jesus to god
he is god ‘incarnate’ : “word was made flesh”
what quote from psalms supports sanctity of life
‘you knew me before i was born’ - ie. that even a foetus is a sacred human being known to god - can apply this to euthanasia and abortion
what does nat. law follow
divine command theory
what did aquinas point out
that divine law and nat law will reach the same conclusions
what does aquinas think our telos is
to reflect the image of god by behaving naturally (5PP)
what does it say in the 10 commandments and Deutronomy to support that it is wrong to kill another human being
10 commandments: do not kill
Deutronomy: choose life
what do pro life groups argue
that life is sacred from the moment of natural conception to natural death. god is life giver and ONLY god can take life away
what would a strong sanctity of life approach argue
killing is always wrong
how would a follower of natural law take a strong sanctity of life stand
by using double effect (eg pregnant woman having life saving operation, the death of the foetus is an unfortunate biproduct) - not admitting you are doing wrong
what is a weak sanctity of life argument
an argument that recognises that in some cases killing is necessary (example of rape)- its a PROPORTIONALIST argument
