Right to life and euthanasia Flashcards
what do pro life followers argue
that legalising voluntary euthanasia will undermine out ‘right to life’
what types of euthanasia are there?
non-voluntary (where someone decides someone else is going to die-basically murder)
voluntary (where someone decides they want to die)
Active (where you’re actively killing someone- eg with a lethal injection)
Passive (where you leave someone to die - they just die of their disease and/or natural causes)
what are living wills
some people write living wills which express the desire not to be resusitated or given medical treatment if they pass out - these wills are not recognised in the UK
what do people who support the right to die argue for
autonomy- its my choice to do what i want with my body
why don’t religious believers support euthanasia
everything in the bible- ‘do not kill’, ‘choose life’, ‘human beings are made in the image of god- to kill another person is to kill someone god-like’.
what scholars/topics would you use if you had to discuss this?
kant (summum bonum, categorical imperative), utilitarianism (relativist, pleasure over pain), religious ethics (bible stuff)
