SANCTIONS Flashcards
Just Punishment
just punishment is ensuring the offender is punished for their crime. The sanction should be balanced between their crime and their circumstances.
Protection of society
The sanction imposed on an offender needs to be such that society is protected from further
criminal activity.
Rehabilitation
rehabilitate the offender so that once the sanction is finished, the offender has dealt with the issues that caused them to commit the crime in the first place
Deterrence specific
deterrence aimed specifically at the offender.
deterrence general
the sanction imposed makes enough of an example for the offender and those who hear about it will not commit the same offence
Denunciation
Denunciation refers to the sanction sending a message to the offender that society deems their
behaviour to be unacceptable.
