Sampling Using Traps Flashcards
The trap can be baited with
Food the animal likes and can contain dry grass for bedding to ensure its survival whilst in the trap.
Traps can be positioned in appropriate places if a
Good knowledge of the animal is known, such as it’s feeding preferences and movement patterns.
Provides information on the
Variety of species present and the relative sizes of population.
The best estimates of population sizes comes from the mark-release-recapture method, this involves
Capturing the animals, marking them, releasing them and then recapturing a proportion of them later.
The fraction of recaptured animals allows
An estimate to be made of the size of the population. Can also give information about the distance travelled by an animal is it is recaptured in a different location.
Formula to estimate the total number of individuals:
T = (N1 x N2) / M2
N1 - number of individuals caught and marked on first occasion.
N2 - number of individuals caught on second occasion.
M2 - number of marked individuals caught on second occasion.
