Habitat Loss & Species Extinction Flashcards
Direct factors affecting species abundance include
Hunting and disease.
The loss of habitat may indirectly reduce the
Abundance of species by affecting food sources, mutualistic species or degradation of the habitat by pollution.
Loss or degradation of the habitat may reduce the quantity and quality of the
Resources and lead to a reduction in quality or conditions.
Temperature woodland in Britian: (3)
Height of woodland clearance was in 13th & 14th centuries.
Along with woodland went the wolf, bear and beaver - Partly due to hunting and partly due to habitat loss.
Other species have fallen in abundance or become highly fragmented, existing only in pockets of ancient woodland over 500 years old.
Habitat problems are increased in naturally small areas of occurrence, such as small islands; The species are endemic to these islands: (3)
Island of Mauritius - Dodo restricted there.
Galápagos Islands - Many species found no where else.
Hawaii - Within 200 years of Captain Cook arriving, more than 20 bird species were lost.
Island habitats are faced with (3)
Tourism and over development,
Over harvesting,
The introduction of exotic species.
