Direct Sampling Flashcards
Can be done by
Direct counting of individual plants.
Eg - The green-winged orchid.
Sampling provides an estimate of the size of a
Population in absence of an absolute count of all the individuals in the whole population.
Many species cannot be counted directly as it is difficult to
Distinguish between individuals.
Most plant sample involves estimates of relative abundance using
Measures such as percentage cover or biomass.
Best sample technique for mobile animals -
The butterfly monitoring scheme; A recorder takes the same walk each week and notes the number of adult butterflies seen - The walk and count sampling system.
The walk and count sampling system gives an estimate of the
Relative sizes of different populations of the same species. This can be compared with different locations and time periods.
Common butterfly species are increasing in both
Abundance and geographical range.
