Sampling Tecnhiques Flashcards
Whole population
Everyone
Target population
Anyone who matches the group you want to research
Sampling frame
List of people who you could research
Sample
Group who you are working with
What is random sampling ?
Members of the target population have a equal chance of being selected to participate
What is systematic sampling?
The population size is divided by the sample size to dictate which participants are selected for the sample e.g. every Nth name from the sampling frame
What is stratified sampling?
Ensure that the key characteristics of the population are represented in the same proportion in the sample. Number they want\ number they have x people in each group
What is opportunity sampling?
Participants who were selected because of their availability
What is volunteer sampling?
A sample by the participants were self-selected
Advantages of random sampling
- The researcher has no control over who is being selected
- investigator bias is avoided
What are the advantages of systematic sampling
-The only input the researcher has is deciding the sample size
What are the advantages of stratified sampling
Could guarantees that all key characteristics are present in the sample
The sample can be generalised
What are the advantages of opportunity sampling
Less time-consuming than other techniques
What are the advantages of volunteer sampling
Less time-consuming
What are the disadvantages of random sampling
It will limit generalizability
Might not get the same proportion of people in the group
