Sampling Techniques Flashcards
What are the 5 sampling methods?
Opportunity sampling
Volunteer sampling
Random sampling
Systematic sampling
Stratified sampling
What is opportunity sampling?
Taking a sample from the people who are available at the time of the study and fit the criteria you are looking for
What is volunteer sampling?
Consists of participants becoming part of a study because they volunteer when asked or in response to an advert or poster
What is random sampling?
When every member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen
What is systematic sampling?
When every nth member of the target population is selected
What is stratified sampling?
Involves classifying the population into groups (strata) and then choosing a sample which consists of participants from each group in the same proportions as they are in the population
(Selection from the strata is done using a random technique)
What are the strengths of stratified sampling?
Likely to be more representative than other methods
What are the limitations of stratified sampling?
Very time consuming to identify subgroups
Complete representation of the target population is not possible
What are the strengths of opportunity sampling?
Quick and easy to select sample
What are the limitations of opportunity sampling?
Could lead to biased sample so unlikely to be representative of a target population
What are the strengths of random sampling?
Sample should be representative of target population
What are the limitations of random sampling?
May take lots of time to contact those randomly selected
What are the strengths of systematic sampling?
Unbiased
What are the limitations of systematic sampling?
Not truly unbiased/random u less you select a number using a random method and start with this person, then select every nth person
