Sampling Techniques Flashcards
Examples of sampling techniques
Random
Opportunity
Volenteer
Systematic
Stratified
What is random sampling
Every person in target population can be chosen
Generate random numbers or names out of hat
What is opportunity sampling
People who are available at the time the study is carried out
E.g ppl in the common room
What is volenteer sampling
Participants are recruited through an advert and volenteer themselves
What is systemic sampling
System us used to select participants
Eg every 4th person to leave the refectory (Nth)
What is stratified sampling
If a random sample by chance is all boys, you identify subgroups and target each one randomly
Advantage of opportunity
Reduces cost and time
Disadvantage of opportunity
Produces bias due to small groups not being represented
Advantage of random
Unbiased
Disadvantage of random
Takes time due to having to contact those who have been selected
Advantage of stratified
Most representative
Disadvantage of stratified
Time consuming to identify groups
Advantage of systematic
Unbiased
Disadvantage of systematic
Not truly random
Advantage to volenteer
Can reach a wide variety of people
