Data Flashcards
4 types of data
Primary
Secondary
Measure of central tendency
Measures of deviation
Primary data
FIRST HAND
Directly collected by researcher for THAT study.
Secondary data
SECOND HAND
Data originally collected for another purpose other than the current one.
Measures of central tendency
Mean
Mode
Range
Advantage of mean
•Uses all the data available
•Can be used in many calculations.
Disadvantage of mean
can be skewed by extremely high or low scores which could make it misleading
can be unrealistically precise
Advantage of median
relatively quick and easy
It’s not affected by extieme scores,
Disadvantage of median
. Not all of the scores are used.
•It has little further use in data analysis.
•It does not work well with small data sets.
Advantage of mode
*It shows the most common. important score.
Disadvantage of mode
Little further use in data analysis
Advantage to range
•Easy to calculate
•Takes account of extreme values
Disadvantage to range
•It ignores all but 2 of the scores, so is unlikely to provide an adequate measure of the general spread of data
Advantage to standard deviation
*A more precise measure of dispersion because it takes account into all of scores
Disadvantage to standard deviation
•Harder to work out
•May hide some of the characteristics of the data set (e.g. extreme values )
2 measures of dispersion

Standard deviation
