Non Experimental Methods Flashcards
Examples of non experimental methods
Questionnaires
Interviews
Observation
What is questionnaires
Contains :
• Open questions (qualitative data)
• Closed questions (quantitative data)
Advantage to questionares
Obtain data quickly from large sample
Researcher doesn’t need to be present therefore reducing investigator effects
Disadvantage to questionares
Social desirability affects realistic answers
People interpret questions in different ways
What are interviews
Includes:
. Structured (standardised)
• Semi-structured (less pre-determined)
Advantage to interviews
Easy to analyse due to being standardised
Can get a deeper insight
Disadvantage to interviews
Interview bias and expectation
types of observations
Naturalistic - natural setting where normally is
Controlled - variables controlled by researcher
Participant- observer participates
Non participant- observer watches behaviour of others
Overt- participant know they’re being observed
Covert-participants are unaware
Structured observation
Researcher uses systems to organise observations
Unstructured observations
Records all behaviour
Behaviour is unpredictable
