Sampling Methods Flashcards
What is probability sampling?
when every individual in a target population is…
- identified
- has a non-zero chance of being selected
- is selected at random
What is non probability sampling?
when any criteria of probability sampling are NOT met
What is cluster sampling?
when randomly selecting pre-existing groups and measure (or randomly sample) members of each group)
What is stratified random sampling?
when purposefully selecting particular demographic categories, or strata, and then randomly select individuals within the categories, proportionate to their membership in the population
What are the three types of non-probability sampling?
- snowball
- convenience
- quota
What are types probability sampling examples?
- simple random
- systematic
- cluster
- stratified random
What is convenience sampling?
sampling individuals which are readily available
What is quota sampling?
similar to stratified random, but selection is NOT random, and individuals may or may not be identified
what is snowball sampling?
when asking participants to recruit other participants similar to them
