Experimental Methods Flashcards
What is the difference between systematic and non-systematic variability?
Systematic variability varies with the independent variable while the non systematic is a random difference which is NOT a confound
what are selection effects?
when one group of participants are systematically different from those in the other
How to avoid selection effects?
- random assignment
- matched groups
what are order effects?
when exposure to one level impacts how the participant approaches the second condition in a within subjects design
How to avoid order effects?
counterbalance: present levels of the independent variable in different sequences
what are the four types of TIME related confounds?
- maturation
- history
- regression to the mean
- attrition
- order effects
- instrumentation
what are demand characteristics?
When a participant thinks they’ve guessed the purpose of the experiment and try to behave diffrerently
