Sampling and stats Flashcards
1
Q
What does spearman’s rank determine?
A
The correlation coefficient- the correlation between species
2
Q
What is standard deviation?
A
How spread out data is- the greater the spread the greater the standard deviation.
3
Q
Give 4 characteristics of a normal distribution curve.
A
- Mean, mode and median are the same
- Bell shape curve
- 50% of values are below/above the mean
- Most values lie closely to the mean value.
4
Q
Define random sampling.
A
Selecting individuals by chance.
5
Q
Name the three types of non random sampling
A
- Opportunistic- uses organisms that are conveniently available
- Stratified- population are divided into strata based on characteristics and a random sample is taken from each strata based on size
- Systematic- different areas in an overall habitat are identified and sampled separately
6
Q
What do we use to calculate biodiversity?
A
Simpson’s index of biodiversity
7
Q
What does Simpsons index range to?
A
A value in between 0 and 1, where 1 is infinitely biodiverse.
8
Q
How do we find the degree of freedom?
A
Sum of both samples - number of data sets
9
Q
What does degree of freedom determine?
A
The critical value that should be used
