Sampling Flashcards
Convenience sampling
Simply available to the researcher by virtue of accessibility
Snowball sampling
Researcher makes contact with a small group who are relevant to the topic then use them to find more potential participants
Quota sampling
Like stratified attempts to represent the target population but more general
Advantages
Flexible, less costly, less time consuming
Disadvantages
Greater risk of bias, may not be possible to generalise and target a whole population, no way to assess precision or realiability
Probability sampling
Random and representative samples that allow generalisation of findings to a larger populations
Non probability sampling
Not conducted according to the rules of probability sampling. Convenience, snowballing, quota
Self selecting sample
Participants volunteer-knowingly/unknowingly
Sampling bias
A sample contains an over representation of s particular category
Sampling error
Does the sample accurately represent the population?
Systematic sampling
Every nth person
Stratified sampling
Use a sample to represent the overall population
Purposive sampling
Focused to certain people
Critical case sampling
Rare occurrences provide insight to conditions that can’t be created
