Sampling Flashcards
1
Q
Population?
A
Large poop of individuals, objects, observations
2
Q
Sample?
A
A collection drawn from the population
3
Q
Element?
A
The unit about which we collect the info (ex population)
4
Q
Sampling frame?
A
Actual list of sampling units (ex list of voters)
5
Q
What are the 2 types of sampling?
A
Non-probability (associated with qualitative research) and probability sampling (quantitative research)
6
Q
What are the 4 methods non-probability sampling?
A
- Accidental (relying on available subjects, good for exploratory purposes)
- Quota sampling (Identify categories, decide how many in each, create table describing characteristics of the population)
- Purposive = judgemental sampling (used to select samples from hard to reach populations = “deviant case sampling”)
- Snowball sampling (sample population through networking - hard to reach populations)
7
Q
What are the 4 methods of probability sampling?
A
- Simple random sampling ( choose N number of people)
- Systematic random sampling (select every Nth person)
- Stratified sampling (divide population into groups and take a random sample from each)
- Cluster sampling (group population into sub groups, choose random sample, select every sampling unit within the chosen clusters –> multistage cluster sampling)
