Sampling Flashcards
What does population refer to
Refers to a large group of individuals who the researcher may be interested in studying
What is the target population
This is a sub-group of the general population
What is the sample
A group of people used in the experiment that should be representative of the population
Strengths of random sampling
Free from researcher bias
Limitations of random sampling
Time-consuming and can be difficult to conduct
No guarantee they are representative
Strengths of systematic sampling
Avoids researcher bias
Limitations of systematic sampling
Can also be difficult to achieve/time-consuming
No guarantee it will be truly representative
Strengths of stratified sampling
Avoids researcher bias
Designed to be representative of the population
Weaknesses of stratified sampling
Stratification is not perfect
Strengths of opportunity sampling
It is a quick and easy way of choosing participants and its consistent
Weaknesses of opportunity sampling
Researcher bias
Unrepresentative of target population
Strengths of volunteer sampling
It is easy and requires minimal input so is less time-consuming
Limitations of volunteer sampling
Volunteer bias
