Key Words
Sample - the people who are selected to take part in the research
The target population - the group of people the researcher is interested in
Sampling frame - the group of people from the target population from which the sample is to be drawn
Representative - how closely the final sample represents the target population
Generalisation - applying the findings to the target population
Random Sampling
A sample of participants produced by using a random technique such as every member of the target population being selected as an equal chance
Snowball Sampling
Relies on referrals from initial participants to generate additional participants
Opportunity Sampling
A sample of participants produced by selecting people who are most easily available at the time of the study
Stratified Sampling/Quota
A sample of participants produced by identifying subgroups according to their frequency in the target population
Participants are then selected randomly from the subgroups
Systematic Sampling
A sample obtained by selecting every Nth person
This can be a random sample to sect your group then you select every Nth person after that
Self Selected
A sample of participants that relies solely on volunteers to make up the sample
