Sampling Flashcards
What is a sample?
The group that participates in the study.
What is a population?
Everyone who is eligible to be a participant in a sample.
What are the 5 types of sampling?
-Random.
-Systematic.
-Stratified.
-Opportunity.
-Volunteer.
What is random sampling?
Where everyone has an equal chance of being selected.
What is systematic sampling?
Where every nth number is selected from the sampling frame.
What is stratified sampling?
Divides people into strata, then randomly selects sample proportional to strata sizes.
What is opportunity sampling?
Where participants are people who are present at the time.
What is volunteer sampling?
Self selection: where participants offer to take part when asked to.
What is an advantage and disadvantage of random sampling?
+No researcher bias.
-Not representative of population.
What is an advantage and disadvantage of systematic sampling?
+Fairly representative of population.
-Not truly unbiased.
What is an advantage and disadvantage of stratified sampling?
+Representative of population.
-Time consuming.
What is an advantage and disadvantage of opportunity sampling?
+Time effective.
-Researcher bias and not representative of population.
What is an advantage and disadvantage of volunteer sampling?
+More likely to co-operate.
-Volunteer bias (attracts a specific group of people).
