Experimental Method: Types Of Experiment Flashcards
What are the 4 experimental methods?
-Lab.
-Field.
-Quasi.
-Natural.
What is a lab experiment?
Experiment conducted where variables are under controlled conditions.
What is a field experiment?
Experiment conducted in a natural environment, although variables are under controlled conditions.
What is a quasi experiment?
Experiment where the IV is naturally presented (e.g. gender difference studies).
What is a natural experiment?
Experiment where there is a pre-existing IV that the researcher takes advantage of (e.g. Romanian orphan studies).
What are advantages to lab experiments?
-Variables are controlled (standardised).
-Replicable.
What are advantages to field experiments?
-Naturalistic (high ecological validity).
-Controlled IV.
What are advantages to quasi experiments?
-Controlled conditions, replicable.
-Establishes cause-and-effect.
What are advantages to natural experiments?
-High ecological validity.
What are disadvantages to lab experiments?
-Experimenter bias.
-Low ecological validity.
What are disadvantages to field experiments?
-Ethical issues (lack of consent).
-No control over extraneous variables.
What are disadvantages to quasi experiments?
-Can’t randomly allocate participants.
What are disadvantages to natural experiments?
-No control over extraneous variables.
-Difficult to randomise participants.
