Sampling Flashcards
Population
Group of people who are the focus of the researchers interest, from which a smaller sample is drawn
Sample
Group of people who take part in a research study. the sample is drawn from the target population and is presumed to be representative of that population
Sampling Technique
Method used to select people from the population
Random Sampling
All members of target population have an equal chance of being chosen. List of all members. Allocated a number. Lottery Method.
Systematic Sampling
Every nth member of target population is selected. Sampling Frame- list of people in target population
Sampling System- nominated nth person {3rd, 5th}. Researcher works through Sampling Frame with the Sampling System
Stratified Sampling
composition of the sample reflects the proportions of certain sub groups (strata) within the target population
40% male population so 40% male sample
Opportunity Sampling
Select anyone who is willing and available. Takes the chance to ask whoever is available at the time of their study.
Volunteer Sampling
P select themselves to be a P (self selection).Place AD in newspaper, flyers or P raise hand when researcher asks
Bias
Certain groups may be over or under represented within the sample. Limits the extent to which generalisations can be made to the target population
Generalisation
Extent to which findings/conclusions can be broadly applied to population. Possible if P representative of population
