Control of Variables Flashcards
Extraneous Variable
Any other variable which may have an effect on the DV if not controlled. Do not vary systematically with IV
Confounding Variables
Any other variable that may have affected the DV so unsure of true source of changes to DV. Vary systematically with IV
Demand Characteristics
Any cue from researcher/situation that may be interpreted by the P as revealing the purpose of the investigation. P may change behaviour in the situation
Investigator Effects
Any effect of the investigators behaviour on the research outcome. Can include everything from the design of the study, selection, interaction with P
Randomisation
Use of chance in order to control for the effects of bias when designing materials and deciding the order of conditions
Standardisation
Using exactly the same formalised procedures and instruction for all P in study.
