What is the red top blood tube used for?
It has no anticoagulant. Serum – for biochemistry
What is the purple top blood tube used for?
Has EDTA. It’s used for haematology and blood smearsin mammals (ie. CBC, PCV)
What is the green top blood tube used for?
Has Heparin (anticoagulant). Heparinised plasma for specific tests (relaxin in preg dogs, exotics).
What is the light blue top blood tube used for?
Has Sodium Citrate. For coagulation studies.
What does EDTA stand for?
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid
What is the deep skin scrape collection method used for?
Demodex, Sarcoptes.
What is the superficial skin scrape collection method used for?
Sarcoptes, Demodex, fungi, yeast.
What is the skin biopsy collection method used for?
It’s good for everything, except for fleas.
What is the sellotape collection method used for?
Yeasts, cells and bacteria.
What is the (slide) impression collection method used for?
Bacteria, yeast.
What is the swab collection method used for?
Bacteria, yeast, mites.
What is the hair pluck collection method used for?
Only ringworm.
What is the comb collection method used for?
Fleas, walking dandruff
What is the MAG used for seeing?
Ear mites, walking dandruff.
