Explain when you would use salbutamol
When a pax is suffering from a asthma attack or emphysema (lung condition)
What are two types of salbutamol administration
- Inhaler- with or without spacer
- Nebuliser
Under what conditions are your authorised to administer this
- There is no medical practitioner to give instructions
- Pax who does not have there medication with them
- The medication is the pax usual prescribed meds
Explain where the salbutamol is located
Green pouch in the physicians kit
Explain and demonstrate the use of the salbutamol inhaler
No spacer
1. Remove mouthpiece cover
2. Place mouthpiece in mouth and push down on the canister while taking a breath
With spacer
- Attach inhaler to end of spacer
- Push down on canister to dispense one puff into the spacer
- Direct patient to take 6 normal breaths using the mouthpiece
- No more thanks 3 doses over an hour 20 minutes apart
Explain and demonstrate the use of the salbutamol nebulisers
- Attach the nebuliser mask to the o2 bottle
- Unscrew the nebuliser mask chamber
- Break off plastic ampule: 1 for under 12 years- 2 for 12yrs over
- Squeeze liquid into chamber
- Turn o2 onto hi flow 4LPM
- Mist will appear- dosage complete when no mist
- No more than 3 doses over an hour- 20 mins apart
What should be considered when administering nebulisers
- Some pax may find mask suffocating
- hold mask slightly away to ensure mist is inhaled
Once administered what actions need to occur
- Update flight care
- Record time on medical report
- Monitor closely
Explain disposal of used equipment and follow up actions
- Place used equipment into biohazard bag
- Note used items on items used tag
