Salvage is the saving of possessions in danger of being lost by a fire
definite function of fire department, particularly LADDER COMPANY
SALVAGE begins with INITIAL ATTACK and continues throughout operations and overhaul
Ladder company officer in overhauling size up must INCLUDE SALVAGE SIZE UP
-ladder company officer must note what is already heavily damaged be fire, what is partly damaged and might be salvageable and what will be damaged if something is not done BEFORE the opening of walls and ceilings commence
Proper ventilation and decision on size and type of stream are parts of salvage operation
Some damage is unavoidable (namely, forcible entry , venting and extinguishment )
-something may appear to have little value to you , it may have GREAT value to the owner
During operations ALL MEMBERS ARE SALVAGE FIREFIGHTERS
One of your objectives is to extinguish, vent , overhaul and examine in a manner that avoids unnecessary damage to the premises and contents
the need for salvage work at operations is AWLAYS PRESENT, planning is part of salvage
in additional to normal compliment of tools, following equipment should be available i over to properly protect property :
- PLASTIC SHEETING
- STAPLE AND STAPLE GUNS
- HAMMER AND NAILS
SALAVAGE COVERS.
-disposable plastic
-100 pounds rolls/54 inches wide folded
-unfolded –9 feet wide (cut into 12 foot lengths/sheets will be 9 ‘ x12’–cover furniture , machinery , rugs
-roof openings
catch basins for water
smaller sheets 4 1/2’ x 6’ cover window openings
if not equipped with material to cover furniture, move it and use a blanket , sheet, carpet, rug, or shower curtain from fire apt. to cover
CLOSING OPERATION :
- windows covered with plastic sheeting
- roof openings covered (use wood from fire building, wood should support weight oF firefighter ), consider using interior doors
- get help from building super
- secure all apts. before leaving
Sprinkler discharge –use wood wedges to plug open sprinkler heads, before able to be shut down
ELEVATOR shafts are NOT to be used for removal of water , and every effort made to prevent water from entering elevator shaft
EVERY LADDER COMPANY IS SALVAGE LADDER UNIT
LADDER COMPANY OFFICER is responsible to complete a single copy OF THE SAL-2 FORM
