Salts and Neutralization Flashcards
How does a salt get formed from neutralization?
Acid + base or alkali = Salt + Water
HCl + NaOH = NaCl( Salt) + H2O
Thus : Neutralization is the reaction between and acid and a Base/Alkali to form a salt and water
What are Acidic Oxides? and why?
They are the oxides of Non metals.
They are called that because they react with water to form and acid
SO2 + H2O = H2SO3
What happens when acidic oxides react with alkalis?
They react to from Salt and water
CO2 + 2NaOH = Na2CO3 + H20
What are Basic Oxides? and explain their reactions with Acids
They are the oxides of metals.
They react with Acids to form salts and water
CaO + 2HCl = CaCl + H2O
What are Amphoteric Oxides? and explain their reactions.
They are oxides that react with acids and alkalis both to form Salt + Water
For eg. Aluminum Oxide : Al2O3
Aluminum Oxide + Hydrochloric acid = Aluminum Chloride + Water
AND
Aluminum Oxide + Sodium Hydroxide = Sodium Aluminate + Water
What are neutral oxides ?
They react with neither acid nor bases therefore not forming
Eg. watr and carbon monoxide
