Salts Flashcards
Salts
Ionic compounds that contain a metal part and a non-metal part
Soluble salts
ALL sodium, ammonium, potassium salts
ALL nitrates
MOST chlorides (except silver, lead)
MOST sulphates (except lead, barium, calcium)
Insoluble salts
MOST carbonates, hydroxides (except sodium, potassium, ammonium)
Making soluble salts practical
1) react an acid with an excess metal oxide/ hydroxide etc until no more reacts
2) filter to get a solution of the salt with no excess solid
3) heat the pure solution in an evaporating basin
4) turn off the heat, leave somewhere dry for the rest of the water to evaporate, leaving the (copper sulphate) crystals to form
Making insoluble salts practical
1) mix silver nitrate solution with sodium chloride
2) a precipitate of silver chloride forms
3) filter the solution
4) add distilled water to the silver chloride residue to make sure all sodium nitrate solution has been removed
5) remove the filter paper and dry the insoluble salt in an oven
