Equilibrium Flashcards
Equilibrium
When the forward and reverse reactions are at exactly the same rate
Le Chatlier’s Principle
If a system is at equilibrium and a change is made to any of the conditions, the system reacts to counteract that change
How does concentration effect equilibrium?
Increasing the concentration of the reactants will favour the forward reaction, shifting the position of equilibrium to the right so more products will form
Increasing the concentration of the products will favour the backwards reaction, shifting the position of equilibrium to the left
How does temperature effect equilibrium?
Increase in temperature favours the endothermic reaction (backwards) since this will absorb energy from the surroundings, cooling down the system
Decrease in temperature favours the exothermic reaction (forwards) since this will release energy to the surroundings, heating up the system
How does pressure effect equilibrium?
Increasing pressure favours the direction which gives fewer moles to counteract the increase in pressure
