How do you name a salt?
A
The first word comes from the metal, the second from the acid
Hydrochloric acid = chloride
Sulfuric acid = sulfate
Nitric acid = nitrate

What is a base?
A
A base is any substance that neutralises an acid to produce salt and water.
An alkali is a soluble base - one that dissolves in water.
Therefore, all alkalis are bases, but not all bases are alkalis.
