SALTER HARRIS CLASSIFICATION Flashcards
used to classify
physial fractures
what does this classification do
links pattern of injury to prognosis
prognosis is
poorer as classification progresses
salter harris 1 fracture
pure physial separation (i.e. straight through the physis) carries the best prognosis and is very unlikely to cause growth arrest
salter harris 2 fracture
most common physial fracture, fracture of the physis and metaphysis, also unlikely to cause growth arrest
salter harris 3 fracture
fracture through the physis and epiphysis, more likely to cause growth arrest
salter harris 4 fracture
fracture through the physis, epiphysis and diaphysis
salter harris 3 and 4 fractures
have a greater potential for growth arrest so should de reduced and stabilised to ensure congruent articular surface and minimise growth disturbance
salter harris 5 fractures
compression injury of the physics which cannot be diagnosed initially on x-ray and are not detected until they have caused angular deformity, carries the worst prognosis and it will cause arrest of the growth plate
pneumonic
S; straight through= type 1 (physics)
A: above = type 2 (metaphysis and physics)
L: lower = type 3 (physics and epiphysis)
TE: through everything= 4 (epiphysis, physis and diaphysis)
R: rammed= 5 (compression of physis)
