forearm fractures Flashcards
what can occur in children and adults
both monteggia and galleazzi fracture dislocations can occur in children and adults
motteggia fracture
proximal third ulnar fracture with associated radial head dislocation
gellaezia fracture
distal third radial shaft fracture with associated distal radioulnar joint dislocation
why is the management different to normal
they will require surgical stabilisation unlike most children fractures
management of monteggia and galleazzi fractures
require reduction and rigid fixation with plates and screws as without surgery there is a high risk of re-disclocation of the radial head or distal radio-ulnar joint
with fractures of either bone of the forearm
angulated fractures usually have an intact periosteum and instability may only be in one plane so can be managed with only casting and manipulate but displaced fractures tend to be unstable and fixation using flexible intrameduillry nails are used
