Salmonellosis Flashcards

Q

What are some ‘critical control points’ on a dairy for controlling Salmonella?

A
  • Close up pen - when cows freshen and enter the milking string they are much cleaner, also less risk of transmitting fecal contaminants to calves.
  • commodity & feed storage - bird feces, other fecal contamination
  • water tanks - keep cows from defecating in
  • rodent/pest control
  • fomites!! biosecurity
  • separate sick animals
  • have separate feeding and manure management equipment (loaders, etc) if not possible, wash in between
  • pasteurization of hospital milk, colostrum (need quality control on this step!)
