What are some ‘critical control points’ on a dairy for controlling Salmonella?
A
- Close up pen - when cows freshen and enter the milking string they are much cleaner, also less risk of transmitting fecal contaminants to calves.
- commodity & feed storage - bird feces, other fecal contamination
- water tanks - keep cows from defecating in
- rodent/pest control
- fomites!! biosecurity
- separate sick animals
- have separate feeding and manure management equipment (loaders, etc) if not possible, wash in between
- pasteurization of hospital milk, colostrum (need quality control on this step!)
