Respiratory Flashcards
What are the 3 R’s of supportive care in ruminants?
Rest (bring them into a dry, ventilated/thermoregulated and bedded environment).
Rumen ( feed a simple bland diet like a quality hay; don’t push concentrate feeds. Transfaunate if necessary and slowly transition back to the concentrates after recovery)
Rehydrate (Oral or IV fluids (usually oral) an can range from water to electrolyte solutions) *if you tube them make sure to clean all you’re instruments!
What are 3 risk factors for Enzootic Calf Pneumonia
Passive transfer
Nutrition
Environment
What is the pathophys of ABPEE (Acute Bovine Pulmonary Edema and Emphysema)
L tryptophan ingested –> rumen flora convert it to 3 methyl indole –> 3MI absorbed into circulation and goes to the lungs–> metabolized into reactive intermediates cause pneumotoxicity.
The damage includes: edema, hyaline membranes, alveolar cell hyperplasia, interstitial emphysema
Whate are 2 other intoxicated conditions that present very similarly to ABPEE?
Moldy Sweet Potato Toxicity (furanoterpenoid toxin produced in response to mold growth)
Perilla Ketone Toxicity from Perilla mint (Pneumotoxin in the leaves and seeds)
pathopneumonic sign for subacute lungworm infections in cattle
paroxysmal coughing = violent coughing attacks.
