Describe the virulence factors for salmonella typhi
Produces endotoxin that causes encephalopathy, myocarditis and intravascular coagulation
What are the consequences of infection with salmonella typhi?
Typhoid fever - intestinal perforation and haemorrhage, encephalopathy, myocarditis, intravascular coagulation
How does infection with salmonella typhi present?
Fever
Maculopapular rash on trunk
Bloody diarrhoea
How is salmonella typhi treated?
Prevent with vaccine
Treat with ceftriaxone
